A few days ago I got what I thought was a brilliant idea- Registering the domain za.co.za and using it for a website on South Africa (a tourism website, a news aggregation site, etc). It was a no brainer. ZA is the code for South Africa and every search I did pointed to the fact that it was not registered. I couldn’t believe that no one had thought of it before.

So I processed the registration and it went through…

Then shortly afterwards I got a polite email from the registrar:

Fungai,

Unfortunately the co.za domain authority rejected the registration request for za.co.za.
It appears they object to “za” .co.za.

Please try another name

Bugger! But, not being one to be easily put off, I tried a few other combinations of the “za” domain: zaza.co.za, zazaza.co.za, etc with no luck till I hit on allofza.co.za which was successfully registered today.

I’m now brainstorming a plan for the website. It may take a month, it may take a year, it may even take a decade- but allofza.co.za is coming…
